Halo — Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Reality Inc. (“Halo,” “we,” “us”) governing your use of the Halo desktop application and related services (together, the “Service”). By installing, signing in to, or using Halo, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. What Halo is

Halo is a Windows desktop application that helps detect AI face-swap deepfakes in your video meetings. It periodically captures your meeting window, analyzes each face on your device, and shows you a per-participant verdict in real time. Detection results are stored locally on your device. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what data is handled and where.

2. Eligibility and accounts

• You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction) and able to form a binding contract.
• Halo requires you to sign in with a supported provider (e.g. Google, GitHub, or email + password). You are responsible for keeping your credentials and device secure and for activity under your account.
• You agree to provide accurate sign-in information and to keep it current.

3. License

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Halo on devices you own or control, for your own lawful use. We (and our licensors) retain all rights, title, and interest in the Service, including the models, software, and branding. These Terms grant you no rights to our trademarks.

4. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Reverse engineer, decompile, extract, or attempt to derive the source of the detection models or software, except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by applicable law;
• Circumvent, disable, or interfere with security, licensing, authentication, or rate-limiting features (including the app's key-issuance and session mechanisms);
• Use the Service to build a competing product, or resell, sublicense, or redistribute it;
• Use the Service unlawfully, including to capture, record, or analyze meetings or individuals without any consent required by law in your jurisdiction. You are solely responsible for complying with recording- and consent-related laws that apply to you (see Section 5).

5. Your responsibility for meetings and recordings

Halo captures and analyzes your meeting window, and — only if you explicitly enable recording — can save meeting video and audio locally. Laws about recording and monitoring conversations vary by jurisdiction and often require notice to, or consent from, participants. You are solely responsible for determining and meeting any legal requirements before capturing, analyzing, or recording a meeting. We are not responsible for your use of the capture or recording features.

6. Detection is assistive, not a guarantee

Deepfake detection is probabilistic. Halo can produce false positives (flagging a genuine person) and false negatives (missing a manipulated one), and its accuracy varies with hardware, video quality, lighting, and the manipulation technique. Halo is an assistive tool and its verdicts are not a definitive determination of authenticity or fraud. Do not rely on Halo as the sole basis for any high-stakes decision. You are responsible for how you act on its output.

7. Availability, updates, and changes

• Some features depend on our backend (for example, sign-in and app authorization). We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features, and we may update the app automatically to keep it secure and working.
• We may add, change, or remove features over time. Features described as “coming in a later version” are not guaranteed.

8. Third-party services

Signing in through a provider (e.g. Google, GitHub), or connecting an optional integration (e.g. Google Calendar), is also subject to that third party's terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for third-party services.

9. Fees

Halo is currently provided at no charge. If we introduce paid plans, the terms and pricing will be presented before you are charged.

10. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR THAT IT WILL DETECT ALL DEEPFAKES OR AVOID ALL FALSE POSITIVES.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR USD 100. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN LIMITATIONS, SO SOME OF THESE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims and expenses arising out of your misuse of the Service or your violation of these Terms or of any law or third-party right (including recording/consent laws).

13. Termination

You may stop using Halo and uninstall it at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or misuse the Service. On termination, the license in Section 3 ends; sections that by their nature should survive (e.g. Sections 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14) survive.

14. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by applicable law, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes will be resolved in the appropriate courts, unless applicable law requires otherwise.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, surfaced in the app. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
